Catapult are a not-for-profit research and technology organisation, the UK’s authority on compound semiconductor applications and commercialisation. With their state-of-the-art facilities and a world-leading team of experts, they work alongside organisations to develop and commercialise compound semiconductor technologies. We were asked by the team at Catapult to create an animated explainer film, as well as provide on-site photography to capture the facilities at their site.
The animated explainer needed to demonstrate exactly what Compound Semiconductors are & why they are so important for future technologies. It had to be accessible for viewers of all knowledge bases, educating on the differences between Silicon Semiconductors & Compound Semiconductors. We were provided with a brilliant base script by the Catapult marketing department, which featured all the technical elements they wanted to feature in the animation. This enabled us to focus on the targeted messaging of the script, editing it down to its most succinct & memorable form.
From here we developed an on-brand visual style that explored the intricate structure of the semi-conductors themselves, applying various animation techniques to help explain the process to the viewer as simply as possible, with particular attention taken to ensure we visualised exactly what a semiconductor is in it’s most basic form.
In terms of illustation style we incorparated a highly saturated pallette with a combination of 2d and 3d elements to help communicate the script, with the addition of gradients & a subtle glow to add to the visual appeal of the animation. The result is an animation that drives home the importance of these tiny, but incredibly powerful bits of technology, illustrating the vital role that Catapult has in growing this key industry in the UK.
Photography
The brief was to document the innovative facilities on-site, as well the organisation’s highly skilled, expert staff. Displaying team members interacting with each other as well as working with the technologies on site, producing a set of imagery that could be used across their website, branding material & beyond. The photos convey the scale of expertise & equipment on site, showing the ambition & capabilities that Catapult has to drive compound semiconductor technology forward.
